Rodney StrongVineyards And Winery/SonomaCounty/Rick Sayre
i will assume that you are thinking about a great steak this weekend.Oh I'm sorry that was me.We have another great feature with wine maker Rick Sayre.let's check out the tasting notes for our feature wine.We are staying in the great town of Healdsburg, and we now will head toward the winery. “There are no shortcuts when it comes to making world-class wines. It requires great vineyards. It demands a committed, passionate winemaking team. And it calls for an investment in craftsmanship. We’ve gathered it all here at Rodney Strong. No Shortcuts. It’s my family’s commitment.” - Tom Klein, Proprietor The Klein family knew from the beginning that this is the most critical step in the winemaking process: it is impossible to make great wine from mediocre grapes. Starting with top quality sites and advanced viticultural practices, we pursue excellence in every grape, ensuring ideal ripeness and picking only then, even if it means just a row at a time. The soft, supple and mature tannins give this wine a strong backbone, while the 18 months of barrel aging have softened the wine enough to enjoy now. Pair this wine with braised short ribs, lamb shanks, beef ravioli or cellar for enjoyment over the next four to six years.
History
Rod Strong recognized the Alexander Valley as an ideal place to grow Cabernet Sauvignon as far back as 1971, when he planted our first Cabernet vineyard on a hill known as Alexander’s Crown. Today we proudly farm four different estate vineyards on the benches and hillsides above the valley fl oor, where Cabernet displays the fi nest expression of the Alexander Valley terroir.
The Vineyards
2013 was the kind of growing season that most would wish we could have every year: a dry, frost-free spring, a warm summer without heat spikes, and a warm rain free autumn that allowed for picking the grapes perfectly mature. Warm days with cool evenings prevailed in September which kept sugar accumulation at an even pace and left acidity in the fruit. We harvested the Cabernet Sauvignon to make this wine from September 16th through October 11th under ideal conditions. Now my favorite part of the feature....The opening of the wine!Cheers!
